Perfectly avoidable by the CR-V.

A flashing message sign definitely isn’t enough. All of the overheights on our project have alternating flashing becons and a chiming bell. This is driver negligence but can’t possibly comply with NHTSA.

For example, ours:

I don’t wanna blame the Honda for getting hit since it happened so quickly, but anyone whose ever driven a box truck can tell you that you can’t see shit behind you for like 100 yards. Sucks all around.

How tall are regular bridges?

The ones around me are all around 13 feet or more. I don’t know if there i s a standard for how much clearance a bridge should have or not.

From what I understand there are multiple flashing lights warnings way before you reach the bridge/flashing sign. A slightly better  deterrent is a cop waiting there to hand you a $1, 000 ticket when you ignore all the warnings.

Needs a waterfall stop sign.

14 feet (4.3m) is the minimum for I nterstate bridges (and that is only allowed in special cases in cities.) 16 feet (4.9m) is the standard across the whole Interstate system, and baring some specific conditions you probably aren’t looking to build new bridges lower than that, even off of the interstate.

There are of course plenty of older bridges that are shorter. 11'8" isn’t even super low for a low bridge , but this bridge gets attention because it’s on a busy road, has a camera pointed at it, and is tall enough that it’s not immediately visually obvious that there’s no way your truck is getting under.

Yeah, I mean I don’t think it’s their fault they got hit, but they definitely could have seen that coming sooner. I’m wondering if they didn’t even realize the truck had hit the bridge and gotten stuck (I’d think you’d hear it?), otherwise it seems like they’d just have gone into the right lane?

Like, the youtube channel has a fucking patreon page.

I wonder how expensive it would be to lower the road under or raise the bridge... or even just to prohibit trucks under the bridge.

The bridge is a railway crossing and can’t be raised without raising miles of track and grading the sides properly. The road can’t be lowered due to lack of drainage and a viable sewage system. The road cannot block trucks because it is used for a business district to receive lots of deliveries (from trucks that are obviously under the height  limit). There are a series of lights and warnings that go off when an oversized truck triggers the sensors and people simply ignore all the flashing and warnings so they end up getting what they deserve.

I actually traced the bridge.... This is the shortest route in order to avoid taking the bridge.

Raising the bridge would be quite hard and expensive. Since it’s a rail bridge, you’d need to raise not just it, but a significant length of adjacent track. And to be honest the railroad controls the bridge, and has no incentive to want that to happen (railroads retain significant power within their spheres from their dominance in the 19th and early 20th century, so it’s not easy to make them do anything they don’t want). Lowering would also be expensive, due to a sewer under the bridge. The costs of truck crashes are borne by insurance, drivers, trucking companies, and/or rental companies, and are not actually very significant, so neither the railroad nor the city has much interest in anything other than cheap signage related changes.

What would a prohibition on trucks accomplish that isn’t already accomplished by the flashing “OVERHEIGHT / MUST TURN” signs and an extra red light cycle to give the truck driver time to decide which way to turn?

Very true, but the truck did not see the SUV, while the little boy could've scooted out of the way.

Oh, I’m not referring to avoiding the truck vs CR-V collision. I just meant that the truck could have avoided the entire situation by following the signs (there’ s a clearly-marked detour just off-camera ) .

As for what t o do about the CR-V, t here are much better ways to handle blind spots than to ram a truck into a space assumed to be empty. Like using a spotter, or getting out of the truck himself if there’s no one to help. Or slowing WAY down and listening for horns blaring ...

Speaking of which, I’m pretty sure tha t was the CR-V’s horn at 1:00, but the one heard at 1:09 has a different tone. Could very well hav e been another car  just behind them, so I’m not sure what the CR-V’s options really were here .
